Trader marking an X over a trendline on a chart printout during a review session

Validation clinics generate the most questions about when to delete a line. Traders hesitate because removing a trendline feels like admitting a mistake in front of peers. We treat invalidation as routine chart hygiene.

The four-question checklist

When price closes near your line, ask:

Did price close beyond the line on this timeframe? Intraday wicks through the line matter less than the session close for daily charts. Match your rule to the timeframe you trade.

Did volume on the break exceed the average of the last ten sessions? Thin breaks often reclaim quickly; heavy breaks deserve immediate removal.

Is there a new swing point that makes a fresh line more honest? Sometimes invalidation means redraw, not abandonment of trend analysis entirely.

Would you explain this line confidently to another trader right now? If you hesitate, the line is already dead in practice.

Document the moment

We require clinic participants to write the invalidation time in their notebook. This creates a record that speeds future decisions — you see how often lines fail on first serious test versus third touch.

Common hesitation trap

Waiting for "one more candle" after a clear close beyond the line. In live sessions we pause the room and vote: hold or remove. Majority remove saves the minority from holding ghost lines overnight.

Practice this checklist on one chart this week before attending a clinic; you will spend less time catching up and more time on ambiguous cases that genuinely require debate.
